Hey old guys…

You know that you run the company and all that yeah? And then you got these computer things in that you can get your email on? Then you employed these young scally wags to empty the bins, deal with the cold callers and do all the dodgy stuff you don’t want to do?
You know what they are doing when you’re not micro managing them? They are wasting time on that Internet thing.
Now you may want to rush out there and clip them over the back of the head like Gibbs does DiNozzo or… you could ask them their input into designing your next website… I know, like sif’ they’d care… they’re probably stoned or something right?
But seriously, they spend a lot of their free time (and your payable time) on the Internet checking out the latest and greatest meme (look it up), tweeting, following, blogging, p2p’ing and so on and so on… I won’t go into detail because we’ll just pretend that we both understand each other.
So, if you think about it, they do know a lot more about the web than you might think. From butting heads with clients in the past on what their website should look like, and how they reckon a frames based nav or a scrolling text would really ‘make it pop’… hmm…
Please consult your feet dragging, fluffy haired, makeup wearing resident Gen ‘Y’ employee and listen to them.
You will have to guide them to talk about the websites and not about how Lady Gaga has sold out and how their parents just don’t understand how complicated they are, but they might teach you a thing or two about what you could possibly try on your new website, something not stuck in the late 90’s… then you can crack em’ around the head for coming in late and wearing oversized sunglasses.
They are probably going to be the ones checking out your website at the other end of those series of tubes… they are the ones that will be purchasing your product or service.
A couple of really quick tips…
- never mention that you’re on the Internet 24 / 7
- landing pages with a “click to enter” are a big no no
- keep your navigation simple, you should never have to explain your nav
- keep away from ‘click here’ make what you want linked the link
- keep your mug off the home page (unless you’re a model)
- bigger logos are not better
- white space is awesome, it makes the site easy to read
- no one thinks that ‘clever’ internet ‘buzz words’ are clever
- don’t mention that ’something’ is the future of the ’something’ – (EG: an online store being the future of retail) it’s probably not the future but the present.
… I’ll keep the rest for another blog post.
