iPads, smartphones and orangutans

It was recently reported that some orangutans in Miami zoo are using iPads as part of a learning program to increase communication with their trainers. As well as being a well-timed story for the recent release of the new iPad (nice work Apple), it also highlights the growing dominance of mobile computer technology on our daily lives.

Let’s catch up

It’s been a long time since we last spoke. We’ve been busy building websites: designing them, coding them, writing content for them and sending them into the big wide world. Here’s a rundown of some of our newest developments.

What is graphic design…and where is it headed?

In non-geek speak, graphic design is used to assist businesses in developing communications tools to represent them. Telling the crowds we are engineers or artists is a little misleading, we are in the business of communicating business. User-interface is becoming more commonly user-friendly and communications are being unified to send consistent messages to the consumer. Graphic designers make messages easier to digest and unify business messages.

Joining the super nerd club

It seemed like it only was a week ago when I started this job but time sure has flown! It’s already been six weeks! So as a newbie girl here, this is my first contribution to the Orion Creative blog.

Why should Santa use Email Direct Marketing?

Good question, I am glad I asked it.

With the kids these days streaming their hip hop rap music, dancing at their all night disco clubs and finding out about these all online, it is hard for someone like Santa, in his workshop, surrounded by elves, carving away at the little wooden toys to keep up with the speedy demand from his clients (or hip hop listening disco dancing children).

Is website content as important as design?

Mother’s are always right, aren’t they? Growing up, my mum frequently used to tell me: “It’s not what you say. It’s how you say it.” When we start the process of building or redesigning a site at Orion, our holistic view is based on a belief in the importance of that proven adage.

When it comes to websites, what you say – in this case being the design of your site, and how you say it – the copy/content and functionality, play equal parts in the success, or otherwise, of your website.

We are creating new and exciting problems

I know that it sounds a little bit like a weird title, but it is true.

As we are getting better and progressing with the ever evolving web design and development universe, we are creating a richer user experience and more interesting elements within our designs and development processes. Problem is, we are also creating more problems.

Google+, Social Media and SEO

Google recently unveiled their new Facebook competitor, Google+ – they are currently in a closed testing phase – though you can get invites if you know the right people (like us for example). It has a number of great features, along with a clean, simplified design (you may have noticed Google and GMail’s design changing recently to match).

Only time will tell if it’s as popular as Facebook or Twitter, but if anyone can do it, it’s Google. In fact, according to a recent study Google+ acheived over 10 million users in a matter of days.
